I am a pilot of the Cold War. In the 80’s every new motorway (freeway for Americans ) in Europe had to be built with 3km straight sections that could be used as a runway. And usually before the road was opened to the public, those sections would be tested as runways, which led to interesting takeoffs and landings as the roads would often have bridges over them! Absolutely routine for old timers like me!
This have been done for decades in Sweden. There many are temporary airfields (roads) all over Sweden. Been at two in 1990 in my military service. JAS comes with no killswitch.
True, but never with such a capable modern aircraft. The predecessors were good, but not nearly as good.
No kill switch. Worth it for that alone
Soooo sweden is basically an unsinkable aircraft carrier
@@robinvarley7026i doubt this kill switch thing… i mean.. electronics is not sorcery.. it can be discovered… and if it ever was discovered it would kill the entire US defense export industry in one go… it’s just not something anyone would do. The truth is that when u sell military tech it has a lifetime of maybe 20 yrs until it’s obsolete anyways… and a country don’t sell tech to countries where they would foresee them being an adversary in this time. So a kill switch only has downsides… i guess the one way it would have use is if the tech is captured by a foreign adversary. Like the taliban… but since they were flying around in black hawks not much proof of a kill switch.
Also.. having them captured it’s more the tech inside the hardware that u do not want them to have,,, not so much the plane itself.

I did my military service as a flight mechanic in Sweden from 1976 to 1977 and worked with the SAAB S35 Draken reconnaissance version. It had no weapons but a number of cameras. I was the only one who did the refueling, filling with oxygen and other things, and checking between flights. If everything was OK, it took between 10-15 minutes before the plane could take off for the next mission. On every two planes there was an employed technician who was responsible, but most of the time they did nothing at all, we took care of the plane ourselves. The cameras were looked after by a separate team who changed film cassettes (no digital cameras then...) and checked that the cameras worked. I was at three other fixed bases in Sweden during my year as a flight mechanic and then we went out and looked at some road bases to see how we would work if we were to work there.
I hear Ya. Respect! 15 minutes is FAST work even at todays standards my friend. ALOT evolving has happened since the 70's and 80's. Today: It's the same perfection: But even faster. I like to see the best ground crews in the world go up against the nordic crews in -40 degrees -on artic ice roads. ALL of this gear has been THUROALLY TESTED to ensure proper fuction in extrme climates. Not just one run -but over and over again. And the boys and girls keeping it all running glitch free too.
@@MrJonken70 When it came to the time for a clarification, the gasoline-powered fuel pump was the limiting factor. We refueled between 2000 to 4000 liters depending on the number of drop tanks (0-4) under the plane. We managed everything else while the pump was running.
After landing, a modern F-16 needs eons of time just to allow the pilot to leave the cockpit.

Pilot: "jävla, I bet the traffic cop is my brother in law Magnus, he’s half Danish and from Malmö, and for some reason his family still haven’t forgiven us for the Scania, Halland, Blekinge issue"
Ground crew: "seriously? That’s 400 years ago - wait a minute, then it makes more sense why he wanted to cut their hair short and rambled about Abba not being that great and even suggested he might drop the charges if they started shopping furniture in JYSK instead of IKEA"
Pilot: "yup, that’s definitely him - I hope they rejected his offer, shopping in JYSK instead of IKEA can get them discharged"
Ground Crew: "of course they rejected it, Björns freezer is almost out of Köttbullar and almond pie, he would starve to death"..

As a Canadian and a former fighter pilot student, I said that many years ago, Canada needs such a fighter jet. Canada can develop cooperation in the aviation industry and technology with Sweden.
🇨🇦🇸🇪
Many European countries could use the Gripen as well. It's (relatively) affordable but still very capable. Could be paired with a smaller fleet of 5th-gen fighters.
Sweden has made our own aircraft sinne the 1920s. Alone...
tooooo late, saab is doing business already with embraer, saw it when i was in araraquara in brazil
You should get started now since you never know who in the south is gonna annex you soon.
Top pilots:
-We can land on the roads.
Swedish pilots:
-We can land on the corners...
...not if the roads have all been cratered as part of the opening sequence of battle by your enemy, and even if you did land, you have no fuel and ammo, because that got hit too, even if you did manage to land somewhere supported and not just a random piece of pavement. Since your enemy knew this was your strategy your transportation network is now destroyed too, so you can't get fuel and ammo from anywhere to anywhere. This is a colossally dumb idea. Within minutes of landing a drone will find and target you, your fuel, your ammo and any air-defense asset you happened to spread out all over the place along with your entire airforce. SMH. Dumb, dumb, dumb.
Put it all in a few big airports and surround those with all the IAD assets you can muster. Put everything but the pavement underground and fight on day after day fully fueled, fully armed, and properly manned.
@@roijoi6963Yeah cause you will land at the front within drone range... Yeah there are no storage carved in the bedrock all around the place so you dont have to move stuff far during war... Yeah they thought of nothing...
@@roijoi6963 You you really think they have no mobile air defence assets around these tactical landing areas? Do you really think an enemy could crater and destroy thousands of kilometres of roadway? Do you not realise at these tactical highway sites they have damn near nuke proof shelters and hangers hidden in the forests? My guess is you just don't think.
@@guseks8413 There's no such thing as "Drone Range", especially in Europe.
If the storage is as safe & secure as you say the intelligent thing to do would be to build a proper airport on the site WITH a proper runway, because a 30' wide road is going to be super silly easy to crater with almost anything, including drones. If the site is known, or can become known fairly easy, you're going to need a lot more than some caves for storage. You need an entire underground maintenance, repair, fueling and rearming area. You also need very well protected quarters for your pilots so they don't get whacked by the first deep penetration thrown at them. Again, think a US aircraft carrier buried deep underground.
The one thing I can absolutely guarantee you is every road with any potential to act as a runway will be destroyed almost immediately, which means you also can't move anything anywhere unless it's tracked and competent and swift off-road. This is why, for example, there is the MLRS M270 and the mostly on-road HIMARS.
Now tell me again how hard they thought about this stupid and ill-considered publicity stunt, because nobody who thinks about this is going to endorse this folly. Just pick a nice flat spot where you can dig as deep as you like - or even a place you can dig a city under a big lake and get busy.
BTW, every fighter in the World, with few exceptions, can pull 9Gs.
@@roijoi6963 Only dumb part is you believing every piece of road will be destroyed, airfields will get destroyed, hence why they road base system can use almost any road as a temporary air base.
Canada, we need this over the F-35. Although the base price is essentially the same, the versatility and ease of rearming and maintenance outweighs the benefits. Having control over the software and also possibly licence building it is the masterstroke. This makes so much more sense than the F-35 in our market. It also outweighs stealth in terms of jamming capability
Gripen is cheaper. The E version is very modern with radars on wingtips. It's basically a whole new plane in same body as previous models. The negative is that it has F-18 engines and other american made components so it will still depend on USA.
@@arteljus983 Great point. It’s very familiar to the Rolls Royce Nene engine in the Mig-15. It can be copied, improved and adapted. This is the world we live in. Everyone is copying everyone. Sad but true
What about stealthy aspects? Does it have that?
@ E version use electronic warfare/radar jamming instead. Don't know if it's better than stealth or not but one swedish pilot said stealth is not needed with those systems. If true then those new expensive stealth planes are way overpriced. People forget that radars also adapts and evolve. It's always a cat and mouse game. I think the future will be with drones and days of manned fighters vill be over in next few decades.
Gripen A-D are using RM12, which if a Heavily modified (50%) derivate of GE-404.
Gripen E/F uses RM16, which is a modified GE-414 , mainly to work in a single engine configuration..
The GE-414 however, was largely based on technology developed for the RM12,
& therefore contains a substantial amount of Swedish IP..
Further, Sweden actually decided to acquire a full licence for the GE-414,
just as it once did with the GE-404.. So legally,
it might be quite tricky to hinder Sweden from setting up their own local production line,
if they choose to do so..
That specific program with 9G turns, went from negative G to positive G so the actual pressure the pilot had to endure was insane.
From -3 to 8G in seconds....
@@larka742 it's even worse it's +4 to -3 to +8g in a few seconds
Vero ma i piloti portano apposta le tute anti-G, praticamente non è per tutti ma piloti addestrati fanno anche di peggio, li avete mai visti i Blue Angels!?, ecco quelli volano allo stesso modo ma senza Anti-G sono il top del top.
@@sonotornato9003 But their airframes are not built for 9G. F/A-18C/D/E/F has a 7.5G limit. Gripens G limit is secret but probably a lot higher than the pilot can survive... SAAB always build things with a LOT of safety margin.
9G, but at what KIAS?
Saab fighters are formidable planes, they do things that other planes can't even dream of, they are extremely effective, inexpensive and require ridiculous maintenance compared to other civilian planes, just think that most of the maintenance is done by conscripts. A plane that all of Europe should buy, not the F 35.
It is probably the best at its price point, but it has many shortcomings, like limited range and stealth. Then again, operating today in Ukraine, this platform would have been much better than an F-16, given its robustness.
The Dragon was the first planet that did the cobra manouver.

Dam 9G... The ground come fast when going down in a loop... 1sec wrong and you are in the ground
It's not only about turning short pieces of road into fuctioning landning strips. It's about how effective this is in real mission scenarios. Anyone wan't take a guess how fast theese 'pit stops' in fueling and RE arming can be by a experinced ground crew? This done by a small crew that literally shows up and sets up basicly minutes before the accual aircraft lands. Does not get more effective than that. In the air i think everyone can see what the JAS Gripen is capable of. There simply is no other fighter aircraft out there to challenge the JAS Gripen; on how many fast missions a single aircraft is capabble of doing one after another -to constantly keep on pounding the enemy lines. The only limit here is the capablity of the pilot flying the plane. And off course: A pilot change relief is also possible at theese 'pit stops'. If You have seen a well drilled Formula one crew in action: You get the idea.

The Gripen’s road landing capability is a masterclass in modular airbase strategy. Sweden’s dispersed operations doctrine really shows how you can turn any stretch of tarmac into a tactical runway! 🛬
This is true. However, the ultimate discriminator is how the aircraft will perform in today’s - and tomorrow’s - battlefield. Having an aircraft that can land on and take off from a back road in the boondocks and can be turned around and serviced by conscripts is great. But how will it hold up against a peer opponent’s air defenses, aerial and ground based? How well will it perform its missions? As far as I know, no Gripen has as yet been tested on that score, so let’s stay our judgement here.
@@frankteunissen6118Apart from international exercises like Red Flag and Crusex it did take part in Unified Protector and flew over Libya. Currently Gripen is used in NATOs air policing in Poland and as a proctector of deliveries to Ukraine.
@@frankteunissen6118
It’s not like the F35 has been battle tested against a peer strength opponent either.
By the way, the F35 can land on roads as well, it just require a much longer stretch of suitable road, unless it’s the F35B as it has STOVL capability, but it’s also around 30% more expensive than the F35A.
The benefit of the Gripen, aside from its STOL capabilities, however is that it’s much faster to rearm and it requires a smaller crew to keep it operational, it cost less to keep operational, it’s faster, more dexterous, and have longer range.
But here’s the real kicker - the two aircrafts compliments each other amazingly well!
The newest version of the Gripen might only be a "4.9 generation fighter", but what it lacks from being considered a 5 generation fighter like the F35, it makes up for on other parameters, and STOL is only one of them,
The new Nordic Division responsible for implementing and further developing the NAPC are currently busy making sure the two types of aircraft will become even better at supporting each other in the future…

"Any" might be a bit of an overstatement, but anyone who fail to see the benefit of having a STOL multi role fighter seriously need their heads examined.
The Gripen is awesome, especially the new version with its network capabilities…
Gripen E has exceptional electronics and radar, so it's hard to see how it would be worse than any so called "fifth generation" American planes at a substantially lower buying and operational cost 🤷♂️
The Gripen can land on a regular road, have its jet engine replaced, and take off again - all in under an hour!
I wonder how many ours it will take for SAAB to switch to a none American engine
@@andersmalmgren6528 Probably will never happen. Gripen also have other american components so it will never be 100% Swedish.
@@arteljus983 Doesn't need to be 100% Swedish, just replace all the parts that are from the US. Stuff can be found elsewhere but might or might not be bit harder to do.
@zerocool6452 It's already very difficult for Sweden to develope their own fighter. It takes time and those planes are just getting more and more complicated. It could be the last "Swedish" fighter plane. SAAB (the manufcturer) is looking into it on order from the government. Don't know if they have made any decisions yet but it would be bad for Sweden to loose the availability to produce their own fighter jets because if so they will never do that again. The video didn't even show the three point turnaround of Gripen. This is what the Swedish air force has always been built for: We must assume that Russia will knock out the air bases and the air force must still be operational. The whole concept is built for defence.
The Rockford turn was something that Viggen could do, not Gripen.
Since the days of SAAB J-35 Draken swedes sandbagged the true performance of their jets. They were always built for both low-level i.e.attacking as well as fighter-interceptor roles. At least in Finland the Airforce was well aware of Draken's capabilities at low-level flying 🇫🇮🇸🇪💪

P.S. Google "Viggen Färila" for some sound...
Canada the JAS39 E for air defense in the north. Right now our airbases can be knocked out easily. There is just no way to operate F35A in the Arctic without prepared bases with long runways. The JAS 39E needs a bush plane hanger and bush plane runways. We have those all over our Arctic territories. It is that simple and along with a much smaller ground crews compared to the F35A it just not make sense to have both planes. The JAS39 E for Canadian Air Defense and F35A for NATO and Overseas operations. We did this for decades with the F101 and F104 as both aircraft were good at one mission but not the other mission.
Not to mention operational range...
Orange man called all countries a s s kissers and laughed at them how they were begging him to remove triffs. It's all on video. His on and off and on and pause and unpause show that US can't be trusted anymore that's why all conutries should cancel their F-35 orders and other militry equipement from US and look for alternatives.
And in the winter can Canada turn every lake of a decent size into a Gripen runway.
The options are endless with Gripen, but extremely limited with the F-35.
To me, these capabilities and practicalities looks like Canada’s fighter aircraft. The rest of our airforce can be autonomous aircraft instead of an incredibly expensive to own and maintain flying laptop-that might even be hamstrung at a whim.
"pull up" "pull up""🤯
The US has suppressed the sales of this aircraft for ages. The Swedish action movie Hamilton from 1998 even plays with this idea. That is that Sweden's true enemy is not Russia but the US. Because who needs enemies when one has friends like the USA?
of course, everything is the fault of the u.s., how original 🙄 if you're going to make accusations you could at least cite factual sources instead of fictional movies...we're tired of having ungrateful allies anyway, go to russians, no one cares 😅
Fun fact: The Gripen can reverse on one wheel so it can turn around on the spot
I wish Switzerland had this splendid aircraft isof the F-35...
Im very proud of our defense industry and especially the Gripen E and the Gotland class submarines, but also the CV90 and our hand held anti tank weapons ar formidable. As are our anti ship missiles. But the way we use distributed runways and the extremely quick turnaround time with Gripen is in a class of its own. Cana should definitively get this plane!
Sounds like he was really working the stick in that cockpit
Respect, awesome ,crazy they be doing drive thru mcd next week!
Sometimes when you go with the car everywhere in Sweden, you can feel the road is " little " different, and if you look around you can see small Asphalts side roads into the forest. Then you understand as a Swede and you feel happy when you driving pretending you are in JAS Gripen as a Pilot. And if you driving Your SAAB car it is for real, Hehe!
We have 50 of these roads in Sweden, but JAS can of course also land on normal roads, but these special Traffic roads have a stronger foundament and are little wider
A fabulous aircraft
This is NOT a walk in the Park

Touching down without a flare, like on a aircraft carrier
Extraordinario avion , piloto espectacular que buen material , desde mi elemental punto de vista imagino seria de gran utilidad a nuestro pais !!!
That is so beautiful!
Why choose an F-35 penguin with problems flying properly.
You have no clue 😂 data link helmet that make you look treu the plane better radar better misssle stealth f35s own the griphen sorry to say yes Its a good fighter and reasonable cheap buth be real man
@@davidclaeysbetter missile, Gripen fields the Meteor, the best BVR missile on the planet. Also the radar in Gripen E is one of the best, and with Gripens datalink capabilities sensor fusion is world class.
@@davidclaeysGripen is faster, has higher climb rate and can super cruise, the F35 can’t. The Gripen E EW suite is superior to anything that the F35. A missile shot from a Gripen can be controlled by a tank on the ground, a ship in the sea or another Gripen.
Pretty short stopping distance!!😮
That’s a workout!
Gripen is build for any country in the world, that is not a superpower and that needs a strong defensive airforce. For a superpower like the USA the F35 fx is needed for offensive attacks and it requires massive support and maintenance. Both planes are fantastic but to be realistic the Gripen is more suited for Europe
@@traver1965 Why just Europe?
It’s operated in Thailand, South Africa and Brazil in addition to to Sweden, Hungary and the Czech Republic
@@traver1965
The benefit of NATO, or for that matter, if NATO gets undermined, it could be a future expansion of NORDEFCO to be more than just cooperation, but also a defensive alliance, is that no country need to focus on having all the various capabilities necessary, but instead can compliment each other.
When it comes to Gripen and the F35, it turns out that the two "competitors" compliments each other amazingly well, something the Swedish Airforce, the Royal Danish Airforce, the Royal Norwegian Airforce, and the Finnish Airforce, has been practicing and now benefits from in the form of the brand new Nordic Division and the implementation of NAPC operating from JAOC at Bodø Air Station in Norway.
Yes buth if you have the money the f35 wil kick the griphen ass anytime simple buth yes its a very expensive plane
@@davidclaeysnot necessarily

Not really, and need I really remind you that it’s not the aircraft that "beats" anyone, but the pilot?
The "stealth" capabilities of the F35 are great yes, but it’s significant slower and much less dexterous - and "stealth" capabilities doesn’t help much the moment you can be observed directly by other units that can interact and provide data to the Gripen.
HOWEVER, a couple of F35 working TOGETHER with two to four Gripen, that’s a very dangerous combination…..
Love it!❤
着陸時の降下率がやや高いですね!まるで海軍機の空母着艦時の様!。
やはり一般道路で短い為でしょうか?。
Yes. It’s quite short. Both the AJ/JA37 Viggen and JAS 39 Gripen have extra strong landing gear just for this reason. They also have reverse thrust.
Thank you for your response.
@@jesperwall839 Viggen had reverse thrust, Gripen dont.
@ That’s true. It uses its canards instead 👍
Very impressive,, ✨💖🥰💖✨

And Sweden bought the Brazilian Embraer plane for strategic lift. A great partnership.

Thats a great video and skilled pilots
This is attribute is massive in times of war.
The sticker price for a Gripen is in the same price range as an F-35, but operational cost is much lower. The F-35 costs roughly $40,000 per flight hour, whereas the Gripen only costs about $8,000 per flight hour. So after initial purchasing cost, you can operate five Gripens for the same cost as one F-35! 😉 Not bad at all!
Boy, all of you "Big Time" "Fighter Pilots" are so experienced 😮 right 👍 ! Cut the 🐂 Shit , you have no idea how difficult it is to fly one of these machines, unless you have strapped your self to one of them ! These men and women are unique and we are blessed to have them serve ! 👍✌️ Peace ✌️ !
The Gripen is one of the easiest jets to fly however. Still needs skull and experience offcourse. But the man - machine interface is world class in the Gripen more so in the E variant. The pilot can focus less on flying and more on tactics

That looked awsome!

such roads are good for this kind of operations, as they can have long stretches without curves plus no power lines near them.
