"Sleep is truly one of the most underrated aspects of health, especially for seniors. It's incredible how the right supplements can make such a difference-not just in the quality of sleep, but in overall well-being. When we sleep well, we heal, we think clearer, and we have more energy to truly enjoy life. Thank you for sharing these valuable insights! Every senior deserves restful nights and energized mornings. 🙌✨
Sad but true! There are different kinds of vitamin D, iron , magnesium.... You need to take the right form (s). This is the first time I've listened to this doctor. I'll definitely going to checkout more of his videos. I like the way he repeats to consult your doctor. Many people probably find this annoying ( especially since he is a doctor). Especially if you are on medications. Unfortunately doctors have very little nutritional education. If you have any medical condition, you might want to insist on seeing a doctor who is a specialist in your condition . For example , lets say you are recently diagnosed with diabetes. If you aren't given a referral to a diabetes educator, I'd ask for one! Even if you have had diabetes for a period of time and haven't been able to bring it under control, ask for a referral to a diabetes educator. Unless the my plate eating plan that doctors have used for years can be dangerous for a diabetic. I found this out a # of years when I sat in on a 3 class course taught by a diabetes educator. 😅
I am truly grateful to have come across this video. As I age, sleep is not as easy as it used to be. I have had many sleepless nights and have been exhausted the next day. The information shared here is not only helpful but also gives hope - that we can still improve our quality of life, little by little, in a healthy and natural way. Thank you for caring about the health of seniors. I hope everyone finds a peaceful rest every night and lives a healthy life every day.
I have much better sleep than I did 10 yrs ago. I use to be considered a noght owl BIG TIME. I take iron because I developed deficiency after menopause 3 years ago. I take vitamin D because I don't get out much anymore and I started magnesium to help me use the bathroom easier since I am disabled. So, it sounds like me adding those 3 supplements to my day has also helped me in a different way. I use to stay up until 2 am. all the time and now I usually head to bed about 9 or 10.😀
Great videos. I am not yet "over 55" yet, but I am already kind of like you.... turning 50 in 8 months and it's so obvious that my body is not the same as it was 15 or 20 years ago. I take my health into my own hands and look forward to being "half a century" old.
A friend of mine was put on magnesium oxide by her Dr. She's had diarrhea for a year. I bought her a good mag citrate and now she has normal bowel movements.
Great advice. Thanks for all the tips. For me that’s just not enough vitamin D especially living in Michigan in during the winter. I take between 5000 to 10,000 international units along with vitamin K2. It might sound like a lot but just going out in the sun for 20 minutes. You can get that much during the summer.
I didn’t pick it up but…. It’s probably about taking the vitamin D in the morning. If you take it later or even at dinner it would possibly keep you awake because like you said it’s the sun vitamin. Taking sun before sleep keeps you restless (me at least) doing night shift i tried.
It’s quite amazing that a doctor has time for making RUclips videos .My doctor hasn’t got much time for seeing patients and house calls never mind making RUclips video.
This video is incredibly helpful! The explanation at 2:45 about the benefits of magnesium for sleep really caught my attention. It's amazing how something so simple can make such a big difference. Thanks for sharing!
Hello, Dr, Breus, I so appreciate your work. Thank you. Something I learned along the way, was that food sensitivities or even just plain other (even organic) healthy foods caused major insomnia for me. Things like oxalates or histamine (those green drinks in the blender or even cooked as a side vegetable) found in spinach & other healthy foods gave me intense insomnia. Forgive me if you’ve gone over this; I haven’t been able to catch up on all your RUclips’s. While I was trying to be healthy, these foods later in the day were a major contributor to the insomnia I had.
I appreciate the kind words! I've got a lot of opinions on food for sleep but check out this video I released a little bit ago and see if some of the things to avoid section is beneficial to you: ruclips.net/video/3oTgOemAO-4/видео.html
Already take Vitamin D, magnesium, iron, B complex, drink chamomile tea night, and I still can't get to sleep. I am 67 years old. I eed sleep. Oh, tried melatonin too. Didn't help either. Any suggestions?
Don't stress out about it that's probably part of your problem just relax your brain is wired differently, go with the flow I suspect you're stressed out.
@ thanks. Take .5 mg of Klonipin at night from my DR. , Prozac during the day and been to therapy for stress. They made me even more stressed out! Just need a ray of hope…….
Thank you for this video but you need much more of 800 IUS of vitamin D especially in the winter time 5,000 IU's is sufficient to get your vitamin D up to Optimal level
Hi! Thanks for watching and for the input! You’re absolutely right-many people may need more than 800 IU of vitamin D, especially during winter. It's always a good idea to consult with a healthcare provider to determine the optimal amount based on individual needs.
I'm housebound and after a lot of trial find 20k IU of D3 gives me the best result. (I just feel better). I also take magnesium glycinate, vitamin K2, zinc. My sleep apnea and asthma have gone completely!
"I heard there are 5 foods that help the elderly sleep better. I'm so curious! 😍 I wonder if there are some foods I'm eating every day? If anyone knows, please share immediately, so the whole family can improve sleep together." come on 😴✨"
I'm 89 and live alone, so good sleep is really important for my strength and focus during the day. I've been drinking tart cherry juice every night for the last 2 weeks after hearing it might help with melatonin levels. But strangely, I feel more restless during the night-like I toss and turn more than usual. Could this juice be affecting me in an unexpected way? Or maybe it's interacting with my blood pressure meds? Has anyone else felt more restless after starting tart cherry juice? I really want to sleep better, not worse. Thank you for any advice or similar experiences.
My Dr thinks 5,000 is way too much. I cut back and got two really bad colds in 2 months after being healthy the three years prior. I'm back to 5,000 iu
Blood magnesium does not measure available magnesium since most is locked in bone. The form of the magnesium supplement matters magnesium oxide is poorly absorbed, magnesium sulphate causes diarrhea and only magnesium threonate and glycinate get into the brain. To get vitamin D3 from sunlight you need UVB that varies by latitude, season and time of day and whilst this may raise your blood level to the 40 - 80 ng/ml adequacy band it tells nothing ot the levels of active vitamin D3 after conversion in the kidneys with the elderly often producing an inactive isomer. A daily supplement of 600 IU is laughable since it is what was determined to stop rickets at the start of the last century. The dose needed to raise you r blood level is 5000 to 10,000 IU per day and you can go as high as 30,000 IU per day for a month if it is very low. Care must be taken with iron since is a very strong oxidizing agent that will damage arteries.
Iron supplements r very dangerous. True Cause of low iron is high consumption of carbs/sugar/alcohol!!! If People correct their diet, it’ll fix it. & eating foods high in Iron is the right way.
Three Arrows Iron Repair Plus is a great HEME iron supplement ... no stomach pain, etc. Magnesium has done nothing for me. Mg Glycinate supposedly produces less bathroom runs and is supposedly needed to make melatonin (both body-produced and supplemented) perform better.
I ordered off of Amazon what I thought was 0.6 mg melatonin. It turned out to be 60 mg! SIX ZERO! I tried to break those tiny little tablet into quarters, which was nearly impossible, and they were still two potent! Why would someone make melatonin tablets that strong?
I can only take half a gummy, plus magnesium. It does have 3 mg melatonin , but since I only take half , it's only 1.5 mg . Have to look for another type of gummy without melatonin. Any suggestions?
"getting out in the sun" - all good if you happen to live in part of the world where sunshine it is plentiful. Countries in northern Europe don't (slate grey skies for weeks on end).
When do you take these vitamins? I generally take my supplements in the morning… I’m 72 and have sleep problems. I take magnesium g. Zinc , d, b, turmeric, cod liver oil… should I take at night ?
I have patients that take these supplements at all times of the day, but generally speaking, take Magnesium in the evenings (if it works best for you), and the others you can be a bit more flexible with. Just don't take them TOO close to bedtime.
As to melatonin, I started at 0.5 mg 20 years ago, but I'm now at 3 mg. I think it's possible we develop a tolerance issue. Slowly over time I've had to increase the dose to get the same sedative effect. I'm always shocked at the doses prescribed. I've even seen 3 or 5 mg prescribed for children. It's hard to find 1 mg tablets.
@TheSleepDoctor Yep, every night. I'm on the fence about weaning. I am a minimalist with many things, melatonin being one of them initially because it is naturally produced in the body, but there are now 2 schools of thought with one being melatonin may have extra benefits. I still won't go up unless it becomes necessary. I also use 12.5mg doxylamine succinate at night sometimes for sleep. Can only find 25mg tabs, so I take 1/2 tab occasionally.
I ❤ your content but why did you not say what kind of magnesium to take. I have found Glycinate is the best for sleep. Citrate and oxide can cause diarrhea. Which most pharmacies only carry those two. Need to be specific please.
Great question. So the normal range of magnesium levels is between 1.7 - 2.2 mg, HOWEVER many people require a little more based on if it's a hot day or it's during the summer (and you're sweating more), or even if you're exercising a bit more. If you're doing any one of the above, I'd check with your doctor about adding a little to your supplementation.
Listen to Dr. Andrew Huberman’s podcasts on sleep, particularly the part about getting outside to see the sunrise without sunglasses. Not from a window but actually outside. His podcasts on sleep might just be what you need. This podcast on vitamins is great too. His just has other suggestions as well.
I do that for 12 hours a shift, including walking at work anywhere from 3 1/2 to 6 miles a day. I fall asleep, no problem. Staying asleep is another matter…
I was watching this --until I saw your recommendations for Vitamin D. Yes, those might be the levels recommended by the FDA, but way too low given that our bodies can absorb WAY WAY more than than from the sun. You need to revise those recommendations, better not to give advice than to give bad advice.
If you listen to your presentation……you are talking too fast!!! You are hurrying your presentation.!!! Please slow down cause you are giving too much information! Thank you!
Very hard here in UK to get Magnesium Gly, well know health shop here does not do their own but do supply from another company. This is the only one I have found that I would trust to buy. But it is always out of stock wonder why. As for Oxide , you can get it in all stores that sell vits and mins wonder why!? It does cause very loose stools but as I take Amplodine and side effect of that for me is constipation that's fine. One question Can you take both Oxide and Glycinate ? Taking Vit D and Mag Oxide my sleep has improved. Have ordered K2 so will see if that makes it even better.
Adding my cup, melatonin does nothing for my sleep not sure why. Vitamin d3 minimum dose is 4000 IU. All the rest i get more then enough from carnivore lifestyle.
AI doesn’t agree with what you said about magnesium supplements being ineffective if your blood levels are normal. Here is what AI said: Yes, magnesium supplements can potentially help improve sleep even if blood magnesium levels are within the normal range. Magnesium plays a role in relaxing muscles, supporting the function of neurotransmitters like GABA (which promotes relaxation), and regulating the body’s circadian rhythms. These functions can make magnesium helpful for improving sleep quality and reducing insomnia, regardless of current blood levels. For people already within a normal magnesium range, the benefits can vary, as sleep effects might come from magnesium’s impact on calming the nervous system rather than correcting a deficiency. Forms like magnesium glycinate and magnesium threonate are especially noted for their sleep-promoting properties due to their high bioavailability and brain-targeted benefits. However, it’s always wise to consult with a healthcare professional to determine if adding or adjusting a magnesium supplement would be appropriate, particularly as excessive magnesium can cause side effects.
I have read many books, I listened to many RUclips videos by many of the world's leading gurus and health experts but nothing came close to the hidden herbs by anette ray. I recommend everyone giving it a read.
I quit watching the minute. You said you can buy any of these supplements at a drugstore. You should know as a doctor that you need to do some research and buy supplements that you know have in it what they say they do. Lotta snake oil out there.
Every time you say consult with your doctor I have to laugh! Every doctor I’ve seen over the last 30 years has no idea what to do about supplements and nutrition! When I asked about what to do about my inability to stay asleep I was told to take Benadryl, a drug which has been shown to cause problems possibly even dementia! One doctor was surprised I had such good vitamin D levels. I said it was because I use supplements and she looked at me like I was from Mars! If I have a concern the first thing she does is pull out the prescription pad. I even tell the doctors my first course of action will always be to treat holistically but they have no idea how to go about that route. I have lost all faith in the medical field!!!
I'm really sorry to hear about your experiences with medical professionals. I do understand the lack of faith. But you need to understand that that's not everyone's experience. Keep in mind that I'm in the medical profession as well! It is still highly advised to consult with someone who you put medical trust in before trying to treat yourself.
PLEASE update your information on vitamin D. Do your research with naturopaths, not the CDC. Your 600-800 iu recommendation if vitamin D is pathetically low. We need about 5000 iu per day. There was an error with the reporting of the original figures. Vitamin D should always be taken with vitamin K2 and magnesium. Also, too much iron is toxic and can cause dementia, so before taking it, please get a blood test.
Thank you for this video but you need much more of 800 IUS of vitamin D especially in the winter time 5,000 IU's is sufficient to get your vitamin D up to Optimal level
Yes 800 IU's is way too low especially in the winter time when you don't get sun you absolutely need at least5,000 Iu by listening to other people functional doctors and from own experience my blood work can testify by supplementing with 5,000 I am at an optimal range
@@marylockwood4400 I never heard of somebody overdosing on vitamin D that's always good to check blood work I take 5,000 in winter time and I have great levels now the majority of people are deficient
Morley Robbins (of 'Root Cause Protocol" fame) cautions against excess Vitamin D. According to him, 5,000 IU of supplemental Vitamin D (taken orally, daily) would be very much in excess of what is healthy. Admittedly, he holds a minority view of this subject: best amount of Vit. D to get every day. He recommends trying to get it thru sun exposure, and/or getting small amounts of it thru taking a high-quality Cod Liver Oid (food based, natural source ... as opposed to where supplement manufacturers typically get large quantities of Vitamin D from), or other foods.

5 - melatonin for seniors and 0.5 mg/day max

I would not recommend Iron. Iron seriously damages the Brain.

@nellyb.9340 yup and the last one was melatonin, which I didn't list for a reason. You should be tested for deficiency before taking it .

Magnesium Oxide is known to cause diarrhea. This is the most common form found in low quality multivitamins.
There are 7 forms of magnesium. I recommend getting more of the others. Magnesium citrate may also be good for bowel movements.

Is it true that magnesium glycinate and magnesium theronate are the best forms of magnesium for sleep because they cross the blood-brain barrier?
Yes
Magnesium glycinate absorbs magnesium the most. I sleep better with it, while others have much less.
I can’t sleep at all , now night I sleep 2 hours , another day I awake all night.
Me too…it’s been this way for years…tried all kinds of supplements, I just don’t know what else to do…it’s hopeless 😢
You don’t look like your over 55. Maybe the sleep makes you look young.
Thank you!

Can Magnesium INTERAC WITH METformin
Go to wk stand on your foot for 8 hrs 12 hrs daily u will get to sleep quick .
I do that for 12 hours a shift, including walking at work anywhere from 3 1/2 to 6 miles a day. I fall asleep, no problem. Staying asleep is another matter…
Hi from Uk. Magnesium upsets my stomach also iron ☹️ I take D3, omega 3, probiotic, vitamin C in winter, echinacea onset of cold and B12
Have u tried different versions of magnesium? Oxide causes diarrhea, but citrate and glycolate are options. The less fillers, the healthier they are
That Vitamin D study as you describe it doesn’t tease out whether the deficiency was the cause of poor sleep or just associated with it.
I was watching this --until I saw your recommendations for Vitamin D. Yes, those might be the levels recommended by the FDA, but way too low given that our bodies can absorb WAY WAY more than than from the sun. You need to revise those recommendations, better not to give advice than to give bad advice.
I'd genuinely like to know more about this -- do you have any resources or research you can share?
If you listen to your presentation……you are talking too fast!!!
You are hurrying your presentation.!!!
Please slow down cause you are giving too much information!
Thank you!
Magnesium Glycinate is the best for sleep, and does not give you diarrhea.
Yes agree I take this one
Any magnesium gives me diarrhea.
No supplements my mother age 88 still sleeps 8 hours a night. She takes zero meds I'm 62 the same
That's awesome to hear! 😊 Everyone finds what works best for them-
Rare are the 2 of you.
Do sun lamps help? I have a Verilux that I like very much.
waking up 2 or three times to use the bathroom
AI doesn’t agree with what you said about magnesium supplements being ineffective if your blood levels are normal. Here is what AI said:
Yes, magnesium supplements can potentially help improve sleep even if blood magnesium levels are within the normal range.
However, it’s always wise to consult with a healthcare professional to determine if adding or adjusting a magnesium supplement would be appropriate, particularly as excessive magnesium can cause side effects.
serum levels aren't telling, test RBC (red blood cell) Mg
Mag Gly and B1 let me sleep ❤
What brand of B1 do you take?
Still here
Talk to your doctor ! ! Hmmmmmm…….
I have read many books, I listened to many RUclips videos by many of the world's leading gurus and health experts but nothing came close to the hidden herbs by anette ray. I recommend everyone giving it a read.
Are you sure of the name of the author? I see a book on Amazon by that title - but by Alyssa J Bancroft.
Actually found an ebook by that title & author. Looks scammish.
Put Drs on commission only and they all go broke
Magnesium works great
Lucky you, not for me 😊
Which version of magnesium?
Magnesium gives me low blood pressure
You can get magnesium in magnesium Epsom salt bath at night that's one way to help relax also magnesium glycinate is best for sleep
Thats a great suggestion
CALM with magnesium glycinate, GABA and small amount of melatonin works wonders for me. Just an idea.
@stevecochrane3120 tried Calm too. Will keep trying.
I quit watching the minute. You said you can buy any of these supplements at a drugstore. You should know as a doctor that you need to do some research and buy supplements that you know have in it what they say they do. Lotta snake oil out there.
I address this directly in my video: ruclips.net/video/km_-AP-yYhw/видео.htmlsi=0K0PchWFQi1nc6tE&t=149

phenibut...best sleep ever
Yes 1gram best to only take twice a week used to get on eBay but they stop selling. Where you get yours from ?

From Singapore
I did bot drink tea how about coffee
Body builders take 100mg. so what do you think of that. I'll try to turn the AC light off when in bed.
I do not think that 'supplements' are needed if one has a proper diet and gets adequate sunlight
From an Australian doctor
Magnesium oxide is not good for you. Magnesium citrate is the better one.
Your Vit D recommendations are too low. 5,000 IUs is a good place to start to get a level of 60-80 on a blood test.
Why in the world would anyone take Cipro in this day and age?
My 95 year old neighbor was given Cipro for a UTI. Really?
PLEASE update your information on vitamin D. Do your research with naturopaths, not the CDC. Your 600-800 iu recommendation if vitamin D is pathetically low. We need about 5000 iu per day. There was an error with the reporting of the original figures. Vitamin D should always be taken with vitamin K2 and magnesium. Also, too much iron is toxic and can cause dementia, so before taking it, please get a blood test.
Ashwagandha and tilo (linden) tea work for me.
Thanks for sharing! Glad you found something that works for you!
600 IU of vitamin D ??? That doesn’t even get you started. That’s a BARE MINIMUM! Way too low
Yes, you do have leeway to go a bit higher, but it's really important to start lower and gradually work your way up as you're starting out.
I would not recommend Iron. Iron seriously damages the Brain.
Banana tea - best to drink at night?
Yeah it's great at night. Not only is there a ton of magnesium but lots of potassium too
TALK FOREVER, STILL WAITING FOR WHICH TO BUY.....
🙏🙏🤍🤍😊
Another guy on RUclips selling supplements online??
What is he actually selling
Nothing helps.
You need way bigger doses of d.
And some people do that's ok
Thank you for this video but you need much more of 800 IUS of vitamin D especially in the winter time 5,000 IU's is sufficient to get your vitamin D up to Optimal level
That's an interesting point, do you have some data to support that?
Yes 800 IU's is way too low especially in the winter time when you don't get sun you absolutely need at least5,000 Iu by listening to other people functional doctors and from own experience my blood work can testify by supplementing with 5,000 I am at an optimal range
Too much vitamin D could be toxic!
